Lesson 1: What is VPN (Virtual Private Network)?

Let’s say one of the organization has 100 offices in all around the world. If one location in Colombo and other is at Kandy. We need to hire separate internet links to share our files. It is not only costly but also broadband connection is low in security.

WAN is consisting of thousands of services. If we transfer our private official data over this public network, it may can eavesdropping or tempering and also we cannot sure that correct recipient get correct data. So, VPN is the security technology to transfer private data over internet.

VPN security data from source to destination by ensuring data confidentiality and integrity for network data. The security protocol is IPsec. IPsec does encrypt the data at source and decrypt it in the destination. And also IPsec has hashing algorithm like MD5, SHA to provide the data integrity means the data is not manipulated while its journey.
