G.C.E O/L Information and Communication Technology 2 - New Syllabus

Tutorial 02: Information and Communication Technology

Let's find out more about data vs information. Example 1: Here I mentioned results of three student in last term test following with their names and marks.

Bill: 65, 91, 57, 96. Rizm: 64, 84, 49, 93 and Curli: 91, 59, 72, 89. Actually, if we write names and marks separately, it will be difficult to get an idea about the subject and marks and who is the best student as well.

But these names and marks can be tabulated as follows.

Name
Maths
English
Science
ICT
 Bill
65
91
57
96
 Rizm
64
84
49
93
 Curli
91
59
72
89

Above table shows students and their marks in a good readable format. However, these details may not be sufficient to get some meaningful conclusion. This tabulated marks can be subjected to calculation as follows.

Name Maths English Science ICT Avg. Rank
 Bill
65
91
57
96
77.25
2
 Rizm
64
84
49
93
72.5
3
 Curli
91
59
72
89
77.75
1

Now, you can see clearly teacher can be able to get the required information using this table to select the best student (the total score of each student, their average score, individual skill of each student per subject and the rank). Thus teacher can take important decisions by information which was tabulated as above.

Tutorial 01: Information and Communication Technology

In this chapter student can learn about;

  • Different between data and information
  • What is a system means
  • What are the systems we come across in out daily routing
  • Characteristic of quality information
  • Information and communication technology
  • Applications of information and communication technology
  • Evaluation of the computer

1.1 Data and Information
Most students believe that the term data and information have similar meaning. However, there is a totally different meaning between the two words. Data can be any character, text, words, numbers, pictures, sounds or videos which is not form the setting of a context. Information is useful and usually formatted in a manner that allows it to be understand by a human. People can use information to get decision by arranging and processing data.

Computers typically read data and it can turn data into information that human can understand.  Thus, computer needs data to give information. When we submit data into computer for processing is called 'Input' and the result we get after processing is called 'Output'. We can identify collection of these kind of a process as a system. Hence, the major purpose of  a system is to receive data, process and store them and provide results when we required it.
